Thankful - Day 1

After some inspiration from my Facebook friends I have decided to have a month of Thankfullness. So, each day I will try to post something we are thankful for...here we go...

On Day 1 we are Thankful for our Ma Pat. She took three weeks away from her life - and Pa Lar - in Oregon to come and stay with us and help out with Parker and Riley. We were so blessed to have her with us - and we made some great memories in the process!
From Fall 2012
Playing ball out in the yard - there was some story about Space Captain Parker and Space Captain Ma Pat - I couldn't keep up with it all...
From Fall 2012
Ma Pat showed Parker how fun it could be to have a lunch picnic in his park. Soup, oranges, and carrots taste much better outside!
From Fall 2012
She also taught Parker how cool it is to draw up in his playhouse - lots of airplanes and rocket ships can now be seen up there.
From Fall 2012
Ma Pat loves to spoil Parker with special treats - like Halloween sprinkle cookies that he got to help make. It was a great time and he got to eat the results! Yum!
From Fall 2012
She even treated Mommy, Parker, and Riley to our first sushi outing post-pregnancy! It was delicious and Parker's apple juice came in a Panda mug!
From Fall 2012
Finally, Ma Pat is great for snuggles - she showed Parker how to snuggle Baby Sister and she got in lots of snuggle time herself.
So, Day 1 we are Thankful for our Ma Pat - and especially thankful for all those mornings when she got up with Parker so Mommy and Riley could sleep a little longer!

The Many Adventures of Halloween

We had many fun adventures to celebrate Halloween this year. Parker was able to wear his costume 3 different times - and not even Hurricane Sandy could slow us down!
First we headed to the National Zoo for their fundraising event: Boo at the Zoo!

We walked from tent to tent thoughout the zoo to pick up goodies!

At the bottom of the hill we were all excited and ready to go!

Riley got to spend the evening cuddled in the baby bjorn. It wasn't too chilly and she was very happy hanging out with Mommy while big brother ran around like a crazy person.

Can you tell someone dipped into the candy bag a few times?
We had a really great time - and barely enough time in the evening to make it to all the tents - unfortunately the animals were mostly asleep, but it was a fun adventure anyway!
On Sunday our neighborhood got together for their annual Halloween parade. It starts at Parker's favorite park - the Fire Park - and continues around about 2 blocks - and back to the park for playing and treats!
From Fall 2012
Parker walked for about half of the parade - them wanted to get in the buggy with Riley.
From Fall 2012
The mounted police came to lead the parade - I think this is the closest Parker has ever been to a horse. He was pretty impressed - until the horse thought his hair was edible.
From Fall 2012
Enjoying the spoils from the goodies after the parade. He went into the little house at the park to eat his cupcake.
From Fall 2012
Off on a pirate adventure!
Finally, after a crazy couple of days enduring Hurricane Sandy and the short power outage she caused at our house, it was time for Trick-or-Treating!
From Fall 2012
Ma Pat helped Parker get all ready in his Pirate gear! With his special Jake sword from Pa Lar!
From Fall 2012
We hooked up with Parker's friends - Liam from next door and Ella from the Park - for some door-to-door fun!
From Fall 2012
It did not take the kids long to figure out how the whole thing works!
From Fall 2012
He came home with a big bag of loot and even got to eat a couple of pieces before bed. I would say it was a very successful Halloween!

First Visitors

Riley's first official visitors came on Sunday night. We are so lucky to share this time in DC with some of our closest friends. Andrea and Travis have been on this baby journey since I was about 4 months pregnant - so it was so great when they finally got to meet Riley!

Big Brother Visit

Ma Pat and Parker headed to the hospital after lunch and a nap at home.

On day 2 Parker and Ma Pat came back in their Beaver gear and Parker got to hold Baby Riley for the first time - unfortnately we did not get to see the Beaver game in the hospital...bummer.

On Sunday we were able to go home - Riley was all decked out in her hat from Andrea and her blanket from Celeste - how perfect are those together?!?

Welcome Riley Marie!

On the morning of October 12th Ben and I headed to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda at a ripe 6AM - while Parker and Ma Pat slept a bit more at home. We were told to arrive at 7AM to expect a 9AM delivery - as things often go in the military, that was not exactly what happened...
As it turns out we had about 3 hours in the prep room to chat and try to decide what to name our little bundle of joy. To Ma Pat's horror we actually had not chosen a name. We had narrowed it down quite a bit, but in the prep room we finally decided that our little one would be named Riley. (Side note: we brought the name up with our good friends Andrea and Travis earlier that week, and while they liked the name I was told strongly - by Travis especially - that my spelling of Ryleigh was unacceptable and must be simpler...Ben agreed) We still had no middle name. We were so lucky with Parker since Kenneth is from both Uncle KC and Uncle Jim, but no such luck with girl names. And so Ben asked if Marie would be nice - since then she would share Mommy's middle name - and Riley Marie sounded just right.
At about 11:15 I was brought back to the OR to be prepped for surgery - Ben was able to join me as soon as they were ready to begin.
Riley Marie was born at 12:12PM on October 12, 2012 - so it turns out that the 3 hour wait was worth it to have such a cool birth time. She was 8lbs 1oz and 19inches long.

Last "Only Child" Night

Parker's little sister was scheduled to arrive on Friday, October 12th. So, Ma Pat arrived with a couple of days to spare on Wednesday. Daddy had to go to class on Thursday night so Parker took Mommy and Ma Pat out to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner.
We had a great time and Parker was rewarded on his last night as an only child with a giant ice cream sunday...

He couldn't even finish it all!
