Good Girl Riley! Rollin' Champ

Riley is really working on perfecting her rolling skills. Although after a couple of successful attempts she usually poops out. Silly girl.

More Sibling Love

Riley is getting more and more responsive to everyone and she really loves to see her big brother and "talk to him".

He likes to check up on her and to help push her swing once in a while.

She thinks it is hilarious!

Train Museums!

Last weekend we had planned on heading up to New Jersey to celebrate Cole's birthday. Unfortunately the birthday boy came down with a nasty case of strep throat so we had to cancel the trip. As you can imagine, telling a little boy that he no longer gets to go play with his friend was a big bummer, so we had to come up with something else fun to do. And I do believe we succeeded!
We have been learning more and more about this area of the East Coast and one thing we have learned is how much history there is about trains! So, we took a little trip up to Brunswick to visit their town museum and their scale train model of the DC area.

SuperFly heading out to see the trains.

The model at the Brunswick Museum is 1700 square feet and wraps around the entire 3rd floor of the building.

It has all kinds of different "scenes" and many had a button that Parker could push and a part of the scene would come to life. In this scene the ferris wheel would spin around.

Checking out the train that was going through the tunnel...

Riley was not that interested but did perk up anytime someone pushed the button the set off the train whistle.

Checking out the area of the model where Silver Spring was depicted.

Our town.

Hanging on really tight to Daddy's face - still not so sure about shoulder rides.

After we had checked out all the trains we went down to the second floor where they had more information about the town of Brunswick and what it was like when the trains came to town.

They had a big bell with a rubber hammer that Parker could hit.

Daddy took a turn too.

Parker and Daddy practiced cursive from the early 1900s...I don't think that being a "lefty" was encouraged back then, luckily Parker and Daddy are perfectly normal now.

This crib doesn't quite look up to safety standards. I believe it would take 2 seconds for Parker to walk over to that with his sister in it and pull it over...thank goodness for swings with harnesses!

They even had some dressup clothes to show what the local people would wear. Parker wanted to dress like an engineer. No surprise there.

After we finished up at the Brunswick museum we realized there was another model train museum on the way home! So, we loaded up again and headed out.

The second museum was much more for fun than for educational purposes. But it was incredible. There was so much detail and a ton of moving parts. There were also buttons again to push and watch things move.

Sometimes Daddy had to pick Parker up so he could see all the moving pieces.

Not great establishments to spend the night in Train Land - Bed Bug Hotel.

But they do have beer...

Pointing out the construction guys doing "track work"

And if that all wasn't enough they had another display in the lobby that was all made of legos! Over the top? Yes, I think so!

I do believe the day was a success!

Baby Naps

I truly love to watch babies sleep.

I love to wonder what they may be dreaming of and what pictures are in their minds.

I especially wonder when you catch them smiling or laughing in their sleep - is it her silly brother she sees?

I just want to capture these little baby moments and cherish them because I know how fast this time will fly and she will soon be a crazy toddler like her brother. But until then, I will just watch her sleep.

Happy New Year - A Year in Review

We spent New Year's Eve at home watching football while Parker played trains and all sorts of other fun things. It was not a "big" night for us, but we spent it with our little family enjoying our time together. Ben and I were marveling at the idea that we will actually be in the same time zone as the ball drop in NYC and wouldn't watch it on tape delay.
But of course as we go into a new year we always think about the last year and all that has happened.
It is hard to believe that at the beginning of 2012 we had just found out that Ben was accepted to the Army Congressional Fellowship Program. We were so happy for the opportunity to move out to DC and all that would mean for our little family. We found out just shortly before Parker's second birthday that we would be adding another little someone to our mix and we were so excited to see who that might be. It seems like the the time flew from January to April and we were packed and ready to head off on our newest journey. It was hard to leave Oklahoma and all of the wonderful friend we had found there, but we were so excited to see what was waiting for us. And of course we were finally going to be within driving distance of both Andrea and Heather!
Traveling from OK to DC with two dogs, a sick two year old, and a pregnant mama was an adventure to be sure, but we know we will cherish the memories forever - Ben was just talking about doing another whiskey distillery tour when we move again!
Our time in DC this summer solidified how blessed we truly were to have the opportunity to spend this time in our Nation's Capitol. We were able to go to so many places and spend time with so many great friends/family and show them our new city!
We were even able to head home this summer for the wedding of one of Ben's oldest friends - Chris. It was so great to see Chris and Traci walk down the aisle and get to spend some time in Oregon.
Of course October brought the wonderful joy of the year in the birth of baby Riley. We couldn't have asked for a better delivery and it was so special to have her come into the world at Walter Reed where so many of our Nation's heroes go to heal.
I feel like it has all been a blur from October though Christmas, but I know a lot must have happened and if I ever forget I can just check the blog!
I know that 2013 has a lot in store for the Culver family - and I can't wait to see what it will bring. But as always, my greatest hope for this next year is for all of our friends and family to have love, happiness, and health.

Food and Play

For about the last 5 years or so we have received a very special delivery around Christmas time - Williams Sonoma Croissants! Ma Pat knows they are my favorite so she sends them each year as a holiday treat. Parker was very excited to learn about this tradition and try some out himself.

At first he wasn't quite sure how to eat it - did he need a fork?

Don't worry, he figured it out.

We were a little behind the curve on Christmas cookies this year - we did make all those other tasty treats for our friends/neighbors, but didn't get around to the cookies. Well, I couldn't let that happen, so we made our cookies a few days after Christmas.

Parker helped make (and eat of course) the batch that we made. They still taste just as good when you make them on December 29th - and with store-bought dough - yikes!

Riley is not interested in croissants or cookies yet. But she does like hanging out in her gym and visiting with Olly the Octopus.

Or snuggling up with her cozy new blanket from her friends Eve and Cole!

Checkup

One of Parker's favorite things to watch is Doc McStuffins on Disney Junior. It is a show about a little girl who is a "doctor to stuffed animals and toys". And, for Christmas his buddy Joselyn got him a doctor kit of his own!
Mommy gets lots of "checkups" from Parker...and lots of shots.

And of course the little hammer is for checking reflexes.

No one is safe, Chance gets his fair share of checkups too. Radar would, but he doesn't sit still a lot.
